Photograph of a pwe in Burma (Myanmar), probably taken by Philip Adolphe Klier in the 1880s. (Photographs from the same performance are in Photo album 70).
A pwe is a form of traditional Burmese performance combining music, dance and drama which was staged during pagoda festivals and by travelling troupes in rural villages. This is a view outdoors of Burmese girls in classical dance poses, wearing traditional costume and accompanied by musicians. The musicians play a variety of percussion and wind instruments which typically make up an outdoor ensemble. The circular frame in which the musician at right sits is a drum and gong instrument.
