'Helmsman on the stern of a ‘laung-zat’ or paddy boat on the Irrawaddy, Burma, late 1880s'

Trade – and photographers – followed the flag. The German photographer Philip Klier first appeared in Burma in the early 1870s, running a small studio and watchmaker’s shop.

This was an old vessel used to transport rice down to Rangoon. The stern quarters were generally decorated with elaborate woodcarving, in this example an intricate design of flowers and foliage. Burma has a long tradition of woodcarving, at which its artisans excel both technically and aesthetically.

The overthrow of the Burmese monarchy in 1885–6 and the extension of British control over the whole country, saw an influx of administrators, merchants and visitors into Upper Burma. The following decades saw the growth of Klier’s studio into one of the largest suppliers of photographic views of Burmese life and landscapes to this new market.

Tounghoo (Burma). Karen village, 1868

Photograph of a Karen village at Taungoo, taken by J. Jackson in c.1868, part of an album of 43 views of Burma (Myanmar) from the Sladen Collection. This is a general view of two rows of thatched houses raised on stilts, with figures at work in the field in the foreground. The Karen are one of the ethnic groups of Burma, others being the Shan, Mon, Kayah, Chin, Kachin and Rakhaing along with the majority Bamar. They live throughout central and southern Burma, and in the 19th century formed the chief population of the south-west section of the Shan States and of Karen-ni. The town of Taungoo is situated towards the northern end of the Bago Division in central Burma and was once a powerful kingdom in the 15th and 16th centuries.

Village buffalo cart [Burma]

Photograph of a village cart drawn by a pair of buffaloes in Burma (Myanmar), taken by Philip Adolphe Klier in the 1890s. This view shows the driver posed standing up holding the reins and the cart filled with a mound of hay. Buffaloes were native to the country and were used for transport, in agriculture and in the timber industry. The cart has characteristic upswept, curved sides, a prow-like wooden section on which the yoke is supported, and solid wooden disc wheels, used because they performed well on muddy ground during the wet season. Although carts were a common mode of road transport, water transport on Burma’s rivers, creeks and coastline was the most important and widely used form of transport, followed in some states by the railways. The photograph is from an album devoted almost entirely to Lord Elgin’s Burma tour of November to December 1898. Victor Alexander Bruce (1849-1917), ninth Earl of Elgin and 13th Earl of Kincardine, served as Viceroy of India between 1894 and 1899.

Tattooing, Burma.1890s

Photograph of a Burmese youth having his arm tattooed in Burma (Myanmar), taken by the firm of Watts and Skeen in the 1890s, from the Curzon Collection. In this view the rather unhappy looking youth lies on the ground, his arm resting on a cushion and held down by the feet of the seated tattooist. The tattoo would be created by incising a series of punctures using a pointed stylus fitted to a hollow brass instrument containing pigment. Designs were of real and mythological beings surrounded by protective patterns of letters and numbers. They were considered to confer various powers and qualities on the bearer and enhance physical beauty. Traditionally, every young man in Burma would have been tattooed on the upper body and from the knee to the waist. The tattoos marked a rite of passage into manhood and were a sign of bravery because of the pain endured.
